Day 03

Bell-Ringer Journal
- Length: 6-8 complete thoughts/sentences/independent clauses
- Prompt: In Chapter 001, the main character says "Richard Parker [the tiger] has stayed with me. I've never forgotten him. Date I say I miss him? I do. I miss him. I still see him in my dreams...I still cannot understand how he could abandon me so unceremoniously, without any sort of goodbye, without looking back even once. That pain is like an axe that chops at my heart." A few paragraphs later, when he is speaking about his physical scars, he says that his "skin healed, though [he] still [has] scars on [his] shoulders and back." Which kind of scars from his experience seem to hurt more - the physical ones or the emotional ones? Why do you think that is?
Bell-Ringer Journal Discussion
- Which scars seem to cause the main character more pain?
- Why so?
- Is this mentality true of all injuries, emotional and physical?
- Why so?
- Is there such a thing as scars that are only in our minds?
- Do they ever completely heal?
- Do we want them to heal?
- How do we cope?
Reading Life of Pi by Yann Martel
